I've redecorated! (The newsletter. My house remains in chaos.)

And a creative reset.

From the Compost Heap header. A pencil style illustration of a compost heap with flowers and plants growing around it. A bee buzzes by and a white rabbit hops by.

Look! I’ve redecorated!

Well, to be fair my friend did all the hard work of creating these custom illustrations, but I’m so excited to show them off.

There are lot of details hidden in the compost heap above. What do you spy?

While I would never call this a rebrand (because I’m not a brand I’m a human) sometimes a reframe is helpful. Over the last year I’ve been having a bit of an identity crisis around my blog / newsletter / the place I share my online writing. I was feeling stuck until I landed on the metaphor of a compost heap.

The idea being I share whatever bits and bobs I find inspiring during the week. Sometimes the compost heap might sprout something a bit more substantial (like last week’s post about rediscovering the gift economy.) But the pressure to consistently write long form content is off. Most weeks you’ll be getting something more eclectic.

Gracie’s illustrations frame this project in a way that I find really inspiring with a visual nod to some of my passions (including my penchant for tumbling down rabbit holes.)

In case you missed it…

This week I published the second issue of : a virtual zine and exhibition space for neurodivergent artists & writers.

Neurokind issue 2. A black and white abstract drawing consisting of numerous curving and intersecting lines. The lines form a chaotic, web-like pattern across the image, creating an intricate and complex visual texture similar to a net.

If you haven’t already pour yourself a cup of something cozy and enjoy. I’m delighted to be able to spotlight the artists & writers who submitted work for this.

In the garden…

If flowers were emoji. This would obviously be 💖.

Bright pink zinnia with two yellow star like petals

Inspired by my friend who writes and is launching a book right now!

Speaking of flowers… Remember when I had a creative pilgrimage to Charleston, South Carolina?

Tithonia spilling onto a brick pathway. My black converse style shoes are in the shot.

I took this photo standing in Harriet’s garden. I ordered a packet of seeds when I noticed how much the butterflies loved these tithonia.

Mine bloomed while I was at WoT Con.

Red orange tithonia against a wooden fence

In the studio…

Between curating and laying track to crowdfund Entwined I’ve done an incredible amount of admin over the last two weeks.

Once I “caught up” I spent an afternoon cutting magazine clippings for a hobbit hole / creative ecosystem collage.

As my friend Richelle says… “Make something. You’ll feel better.”

Experimenting with embedding a time lapse. Nothing fancy. Just me cutting and arranging flowers and pathways from magazines. I’ll probably make a reel on Instagram later this week. I wish those would embed.

I shouldn’t have waited until I was caught up to make something. I continue to struggle to prioritize creative work above admin and when the balance is off my mental health always suffers. This was a really great sensory reset.

I almost forgot…

This week I sent out my first round of snail mail letters to my paid supporters!

I typed it out on my vintage typewriter and then attempted a doodle of my tithonia and added some marginalia. I made a few extra photocopies so if you sign up during July you’ll also get this letter!

Corner of letter with a doodle of a flower typewritten and handwritten words cross the space describing my garden

Let's chat header with tin can telephone and stars

The Internet is like a tin can telephone. It’s magic when someone talks back. I’d love to hear from you.

What’s in your creative compost heap this week?

I appreciate you.

P.S. Do you love the new illustrations as much as I do?! What references can you spot?

Yes, even across the pond! I chose $3 for the lowest tier because it just covers costs of printing and a global stamp. This project is more about connection than making money. You’re welcome to tip in more if you’d like, but it’s not expected.

I LOVE the idea of a compost heap! It makes me think of how I read (somewhere, who knows where) that all of your past ideas and creative projects fuel your next and future projects, even if they weren’t “successful” or “complete”. This week in my compost heap are sewing stretchy fabric, which is fueling me sewing a swimsuit for the first time. It has been a MESS but I can see my progress and growth.

I love all of this. Do you know the show Hadestown? The creator & songwriter has some great quotes along those lines: https://publish.obsidian.md/sarahshotts/The+Compost+Heap/%F0%9F%A5%95+Kitchen+Scraps/Creative+Compost

The illustrations are so cute!! I also use a compost metaphor in my creative work. It helps me not put too much pressure on my art making process and helps me stay loose, fun and casual. Your garden is looking beautiful 🙂

Thank you Jeremy. I find there’s a lot of richness in that messy exploration space if I’m brave enough to stay there. As for my real garden it is largely overgrown, but I lean on flowers that thrive under neglect and embracing imperfection there as well.

I love the image Gracie created for you! I love how it represents so many facets of you… the rabbit, the Ace card, the wheel. It’s such a thoughtful design. Did you give feedback or was it created independently?

Also, how are you embedding videos on Substack now? Are you putting them on YouTube?

    1. Sarah Shotts Avatar
      Sarah Shotts

That’s a great question Emily! I started with a very literal / realistic prompt and it was Gracie’s idea to hide some details. It grew from there. 🌱

I actually dragged and dropped that video file right into Substack! I had no idea it would work, but it did!

Thanks for sharing. And I didn’t know you could embed video directly on Substack. Thanks!!

I had the folder open to drag in a photo so it was a happy accident. You can also make a “video post” to embed directly on Substack. That puts the video at the top though.

I’ve loved watching your creative process grow and evolve over the years. When you moved to Substack did you transfer all of your content over? I’m moving my blog to Substack and nervous about transferring years and years of content.

    1. Sarah Shotts Avatar
      Sarah Shotts

Thank you Stephanie! I started fresh so I didn’t import my content. But I’ve actually gone backwards and started archiving copies of my Substack posts on my blog. The reason being platforms come and go, but a blog is a place of your own so all of your work is future proofed there. Best of luck making the switch however you do it. There are definitely more readers and engagement here.

Your work and words are great, Sarah. You have the power of inspire people to go on with their creativity. And you’re words about the free internet are so true. We are in a timeperiod where almost everything has to be paid. A subscription on one substack-newsletter, which I almost not read because lack of time costs about 60 euro. This is the prise for two to three real books on the shelf, which I prefer more.
On my compostheap this week there is my newsletter on Substack about our holiday in the north of Norway, a search for healthy recipes for this week, of course watching some sessions of the olympics, preparing for our week to Aix-en-Provence, and deciding which photography stuff I will sell.
I love this community to share thoughts, so hereby…

Hello Sarah, the recipes is an ongoing thing for us. I found a very nice one on making broccolipuree which tasted really good, with caramelized onions and dried tomatoes on top. The Olympics, yesterday was a top day for Belgium with gold and bronze in the cycling time trial. So, that made me happy…

    What gorgeous illustrations. ❤️❤️❤️

How do you insert arty dividers etc, I’ve struggled and when I asked for help in notes no one replied? Or even a pic that doesn’t need to be inserted as a ‘photo’.

I love the new rebrand too. 💜❤️💜

Oh, it’s so fun to see these illustrations in your newsletter now! I’m really happy to have been a part of it, and as always am inspired by your approach to things. I love the Timelapse, and the very important reminder to prioritize making art first. That’s such a difficult one that I struggle with, too. Here’s to continually reminding ourselves and each other to be real humans making real art in real life. 🧡

    1. Sarah Shotts Avatar
      Sarah Shotts

I always underestimate how much creative play refuels my energy. (Versus more constrained & controlled types of creativity.) I started working on that collage and the next day I had a huge epiphany about my novel structure. There was no tangible connection. But it was also no coincidence. The idea surfaced during a chat I had with some Wheel of Time friends about Stargate. Making a collage + rereading some beloved books + geeking out with friends created the perfect neurostorm for idea generation. And something I’ve been struggling with for years snapped into place effortlessly. I’m still buzzing about it! But it’s against all my instincts to prioritize these things. We have to keep reminding each other how powerful one small act of creativity can be. 🌱

    A. Wilder Westgate

The new illustrations are wonderful! I loved the collage video. I’ve been planning to try collage-making soon. I’m hoping it’ll help me let go of a bit of my perfectionism and just play.

    1. Sarah Shotts Avatar
      Sarah Shotts

      Thank you! 🥰

I do find certain art forms & materials engage my inner child. I still haven’t glued anything down so moving the papers around (even with a bit of cutting) feels low stakes and experimental. Then, at a certain point, it comes together. My last collage I added a bit of paint too. ✂️🎨🖍️

      1. A. Wilder Westgate Avatar
        A. Wilder Westgate

That sounds lovely. I really want to incorporate some hand painted elements, too! I’ve been collecting bits of paper and clippings here and there so I can play when I have more energy.

          Sarah Shotts

The collecting is part of the art making. 💙
