An Experiment ⚡

Recentering my creative practice

I’m trying something a bit different with my notetaking and blogging practice.

Long form posts will continue to be published here under .

Roundup and creative practice style posts (formerly Down the Rabbit Hole) will now be published directly on my website. I’m experimenting with cross posting those to a second Substack publication. If there’s enough interest I’ll keep doing that.

Substack seems to really value long form content, but these round up / scrapbook / commonplace book type posts are really intrinsic to my own self reflection and creative process.

So I’m writing these for me, but eclectic weirdos are welcome to come along.

Here’s a taste of what that might look like.

You’ll have to subscribe to to get these by email in the future. (Or pop them into an RSS reader if you’re old school.)

An Experiment. Week 1.

This experiment is a forward facing commonplace book.

I’m reading How We Might Live by Suzanne Cooper which I started on my retreat. It’s a biography of William & Jane Morris exploring how Jane was entwined in William’s creative process. Right now I’m fascinated by the clues that they were both neurodivergent.

Recentering. Week 2.

I’m attempting to recenter my creative practice.

If this feels cyclical that’s because it is.

My creative orbit spiralling closer and closer to something that’s right for me.

When throwing pottery on the wheel you have to center it first.

I’m going to keep this separate for a while and see how it feels.

I reserve the right for future pivots, but right now giving this project a bit of space feels like the right thing to do.

What have you been making or experimenting with?

Tell me about it or drop a link below.

Cheers,

It feels like a lesson I keep returning to. I so easily get tunnel vision, but there are so many options when you engage with curiosity. I want to foster that mindset of experimentation over my innate drive for perfection. 🔬

I’ve added your second Stack to my Feedly – an old school style blog should be read in an old school style feed reader! I’ve been musing over the different voices and styles I use for Substack vs blogging too, and can’t see me giving up either in a hurry!

I love that! They are two different beasts!

This is what I do! I want most of my thoughts on my blog, with links in my newsletter and a synopsis. I like your keep reading button, however, and I’m going to adopt that!

Love a button! One of the things Substack makes easy. 💫

I am REALLY stuck about what to do on my blog because my website didn’t have one for a while so everything was here but now it does!

What I tried to do last year was write on Substack and copy to my blog. But all the formatting took ages and it was such a pain I found it hard to keep up with. If I write on Squarespace and copy to Substack very few changes need to be made. Who’d have thought? 🤷

Oh excellent! I copied from SS to my blog and the formatting took seconds to fix – what a relief!! But few people say that’s not good for SEO!

I’m not bothered about SEO. I just want an archive of my posts that I own. Google results are full of so much spam anymore. 🤷

You could try posting a teaser there and link here to read more? It’s all about what your goals are and where you want people to end up.

I started my substack yesterday and it is an experiment in constraint (as a limited series) and because I’m going to experiment with form along the way. I’m excited to see where it takes me.
